🍄 Metrognomes on the Go: Launching Our Gnomecore 3D Metronome on Google Play

What’s better than a line of garden gnomes bouncing to the beat in a magical mushroom forest?

Having them right in your pocket.

I am thrilled to announce that Metrognomes is now officially available on the Android Google Play Store!

Originally built as a cozy desktop and HTML5 web experiment, the feedback was clear: people wanted to take these little gnomes to their drum kits, piano benches, and guitar practices. Porting the app to mobile was the natural next step.

Here is a quick overview of the app, how it works, and what it took to bring our gnomecore rhythm utility to mobile screens.


🍃 A Whimsical Overview of the App

If you missed the original build write-up, Metrognomes is a 3D metronome built with Godot 4.6 and GDScript. Instead of a boring, sterile flashing light or a simple digital counter, Metrognomes gives you a peaceful mushroom grove populated by garden gnomes.

Here is how the magic works:

  • Gnomes as Beats: When you set a time signature (such as 3/4, 4/4, or 5/4), a corresponding number of gnomes line up in the grove.
  • Dynamic Bouncing: As the metronome ticks, each gnome bounces in sequence. On accented beats, the active gnome performs a high, dramatic leap. On regular beats, they do a short, playful hop.
  • Wandering Wildlife: A curious little opossum walks a winding path through the grove—but only while the metronome is active. When you pause the beat, the opossum rests.
  • Flexible Signatures: Choose between classic and complex time signatures, including 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, and 7/8.

🔊 Under the Hood: Pure Mobile Performance

Porting a real-time, audio-critical utility from desktop to mobile comes with a few technical considerations:

1. Zero-Sample Procedural Audio

To keep the download size under 30MB and prevent audio latency, Metrognomes does not load pre-recorded audio files. Instead, it synthesizes sound waves directly in memory using Godot’s AudioStreamGenerator. Every click, woodblock, and electronic beep is mathematically generated using a sine wave with exponential decay:

This ensures crisp, latency-free audio on a massive variety of Android hardware.

2. Sub-Frame Precision (Drift-Free Timing)

Because mobile devices can experience frame rate drops, traditional timing methods (like checking a delta timer inside _process) can drift over time. Metrognomes uses a time accumulator that subtracts the tick interval once reached instead of resetting to zero. This retains any sub-frame remainders and distributes them to the next tick, keeping your rhythm perfectly aligned.

3. Responsive 3D Layouts

To accommodate everything from tall aspect ratio smartphones to widescreen tablets, we redesigned the UI using Godot’s responsive container systems. The 3D camera dynamically adjusts its field of view (FOV) based on the screen’s aspect ratio, keeping the gnomes centered and the forest looking lush without clipping.

Like the web version, the Android app is built with user privacy in mind. There are:

  • No ads
  • No tracking scripts or analytics
  • No internet connection required (works entirely offline)
  • No accounts or sign-ups
